An example:

We affirm the motion that we should go to Mars.

Background – The Earth is ending in 200 years so humankind must find a new home or perish.

Pause.

If there are not any points of clarification, we will move to the affirmitive case.

I

Claim: The economy will go up for us

Warrant: Because jobs will be created

Impact: Humanity will be happy if there is a good economy

II

Claim: Mars is a good source of minerals

Warrant: It is the closest planet to us

Warrant: Less dangerous than some of the other planets or asteroids

Impact: Earth is running out of minerals, so this will help

Impact: The Earth is hurt when we mine for minerals, so now less damage to it

This example is incomplete, but shows that you can have more than one warrant and impact in each argument. There cannot be more than one claim, though.

The warrant is why the claim is true, whereas the impact is why the warrant matters. Generally the claim and warrant are expressed more easily, so try to make sure your impact makes sense.

The background and caveat should only be about a minute in length.
