We annually elect a President and five Vice Presidents: Internal Operations, External Operations, Education, Public Relations and Finance.
Elizabeth Carroll ’23
Elizabeth Carroll (she/her) is a junior Economics and Legal Studies major from Dedham, MA. With over six years of competitive debate experience, Elizabeth takes pride in mentoring novice debaters and watching their confidence soar. By the end of her presidency, Elizabeth hopes to establish a formal alumni network and send the first team in UMass history to the World University Debating Championship. In her spare time, Elizabeth is learning to lift weights and play poker.
Samantha Hano ’22
Vice President of Internal Operations
Sam Hano (she/her) is a Senior Public Health and Psychology major. She joined debate the first week of freshman year and has been hooked ever since. Sam’s absolute favorite part of being in UMDS is all of the wonderful people she has met during her time on the team! When she is not debating, Sam is usually spending quality time with her friends and family, sunbathing on the beach, or shredding the gnar on the ski slopes!

Eric trueswell ’23
Vice President of Finance
Eric Trueswell (he/him) is a Junior Political Science and Economics major from Sunderland, MA. Starting with Model UN in high school and seeking something more concrete in college, Eric joined UMDS in the fall of his freshman year and fell in love with both the APDA and BP debate formats. He has equally high aspirations as his fellow E-Board members for the future of UMDS, and hopes to help make a space where anybody interested in debate can become the best version of themselves. When he isn’t killing it at debate tournaments, our boy Ricky loves pumping iron, playing guitar, losing games of chess, and engaging in antics and tomfoolery with his friends.
Stephanie Laplante ’22
Vice President of Public Relations (Fall 2021)
Stephanie LaPlante (she/her) is a Senior Political Science major from Long Island, New York. Beginning her debating career in college, Stephanie values the skills gained from debate and all the memories and friends she has made. When she is not debating she enjoys rock climbing, swimming and finding new places to eat out!
elise greene ’22
Vice President of Public Relations (Spring 2022)
Elise Greene (she/her) is a Senior Psychology major, minoring in Education. Originally from Norfolk, Massachusetts, Elise came into college with no formal debate experience. Elise appreciates the opportunity UMDS gives her to meet people who are also passionate about debate and public speaking. In her free time, you can find her giving tours around campus, cooking and exploring the outdoors.
